Remains of the war in Syria

In 2011, Aleppo was Syria's largest city before the war destroyed most of this UNESCO World Heritage Site between 2012 and 2016. Al-Sakhour, one of the poorest districts of Aleppo, was one of the most affected areas. Under a very slow recovery process, people were striving to get over the devastation when two deadly earthquakes hit northwest Syria in February 2023.
